Vedic Samskaras -
Samskāras are a series of sacraments, sacrifices and rituals that serve as rites of passage and mark the various stages of the human life and/ or signify entry to a particular Ashram. All Human beings, especially the Dvija or twice-born are required to perform a number of sacrifices with oblations to the Divinities, the Ancestors and the Guardians in accordance with the Vedic dictums for a dharmic or righteous life. Some of these rituals include the Garbhādhāna-samskara, which is the purification of the womb to receive a Brahmincal child, the Nāmakarman-samskara or name-giving ceremony of a newly born child, the Upanayana-samskara, awarding of the sacred thread ceremony, the Vivāha-samskara or marriage ceremony and the Antyesti-samskara which are the last rites at death. There are 12 samskaras in total that need to be observed by all Vedic people.
